Heat Mats

New to the Herp Shop for October 2008

Heat Mats produce ultra long wavelength infra red heat. This wavelength is invisible to the human eye and tends to heat furnishings in the cage rather than the air. This action of heating is very similar to the sun and it has the ability to heat anything that it strikes but with the air temperature remaining much lower. Reptiles absorb this at in a manner very similar to basking in a natural environment. Heat mats do get warm but provide very gentle warmth which the animal can sit under or on top of. Used under normal conditions the mats cannot burn the animal.

It should be noted that heat mats give a gentle background heat. If you are keeping animals that requires higher temperatures, then you may require additional supplemental heating. Many diurnal or day active species of lizard require basking spots of rather high localised heat. Additional heat sources should then be provided for these species. Heat mats are excellent primary heaters for most applications requiring night time heating, as they emit no visible light and are the most widely used heater for this purpose.

For many species of snake and for most invertebrate heating. Heat mats are excellent as the sole heat sources. If in doubt please seek expert advice with regard to the animal's specific requirements.

Reptile Radiators
  • To provide a light free basking hotspot
  • Provide Background heat for a medium to large enclosure
  • Can also be used to heat a kennel, cattery or bird brooder
  • Can be used in conjunction with the Habistat range of thermostats
  • Compact size: 310mm x 210mm x 33mm

Reptile Radiators are new higher powered heaters from Habistat. They replace the radiant heat panels and while they maintain the advantages of the old panels, substantial technical improvements have been added. Purpose designed as an animal heater, the Habistat Reptile Radiator will not harm animals, people or fittings if mounted properly. It is specifically designed to direct most of its heat out through the lower, radiating face. Protective insulation minimises the heating of the upper, mounting site. At the same time, even the hottest surface, that which heats the cage, is not so hot that it will instantly burn animals or humans.**

Carbon Element heater construction gives incredible reliability. This hot new heater creates an optimal heat density - 75 watts of heat spread over 650 cm3. Most of the heat generated is directed out from the lower surface and the mounting side tends to run at significantly cooler temperatures. It is therefore safer and very economical to run.

**To prevent overheating it is recomended that Reptile Radiators always be used in conjunction with a thermostat.

"Twin (2) Barefoot Bushman DVD's"

The Natural History of a Crocodile - Solomon's Story.

This is a natural history of Rob Bredl's largest crocodile, Solomon. Solomon was caught as a 4 metre rogue near Bamaga in Cape York peninsula. When he arrived at Rob's zoo he seemed different from other wild caught crocodiles. Rob came to believe that he had let this one go as a baby from the crocodile farm at Edward River.

Years later, Solomon became famous for attacking and nearly killing Rob's niece, Karla. Rob and Karla tell us just what went wrong and we learn of her remarkable rescue by her father Joe.

Crocodile

Filmed in 1972, this programme is one of the first ever to be made on crocodiles in Australia. It gives a rare glimpse of life at Edward River when Joe Bredl, with the help of his son Rob, fought to create the Edward River Crocodile farm, at a time when almost nothing was known about crocodiles and they were a species bordering on extinction in Australia.

Bush Tucker Banquet
"A Barefoot Bushman DVD" -
Exclusive to the Herp Shop

In BUSH TUCKER BANQUET Rob Bredl gives us a light hearted, entertaining and informative guide to bush tucker in the 20th century Australian bush. For Rob Bredl and his mate John Robinson, the bush is just one big playground. Together they travel deep into far north Queensland's gulf country to show us what's to eat, what's nice and what's not. As they journey, we learn important lessons on how to live off the land. In his bush tucker kitchen the Barefoot Bushman prepares such things as feral rat, barramundi sausage and cane toad legs and gives some good advice on how to save on the supermarket bill. Rob Bredl uses traditional aboriginal trapping and hunting techniques and a few of his own to show just how easy it is to get a feed in the bush if you are not too fussy.

Originally the plan was to film the plane wreck of the Grady Gaston which went down in the Gulf country during World War Two but as they said:

"We spent several days here filming but by now it was clear that the concept of the programme had to change and so it became Bush Tucker Banquet, a modern day recipe for survival in the Australian bush, garnished with a topping of Rob Bredl's quirky tongue in cheek attitudes on getting a feed in the bush. It was one of the top ten rating documentaries when it was televised."

This one hour plus documentary includes 18 minutes of new footage and is available exclusively from
The Herp Shop - $25 per copy.

Twin (2) Barefoot Bushman DVD's for just $30 per set at the Herp Shop.

Exclusive to the Herp Shop

Rob Bredl has a unique gift. It is a fearless understanding of animal behaviour. This gift has seen him judged by many as the world's best crocodile wrangler. It would be a surprise indeed, if these two programmes did not provide us with a unique and highly informative view of these two groups of Australian snakes. These are probably the two best shows ever produced on the TIGERS and TAIPANS

THE TAIPANS (53 Mins.)
"A Barefoot Bushman DVD"

Taipans are the largest, fastest, most venomous snakes on earth; thoroughbreds of the snake world. “They’re not like this to kill us humans and they have killed a few but to hunt rats and bandicoots. They are the best rat catchers of all.” In this program Rob Bredl the Barefoot Bushman takes us into the secret world of the taipans. He tells us why they are the most dangerous snakes of all. He shows us how taipans mate, lay eggs and hunt and explains just why they are so large, have such strong venom and so much of it. Also the programme examines the reasons for two different taipans and compares their hunting styles and prey type as well as their environments.Rob Bredl and his friend John Robinson venture deep into the Australian desert enduring floods, mud and flies to find the Inland Taipan, the world’s most poisonous snake.

THE TIGER SNAKES (45 Mins)
"A Barefoot Bushman DVD"

Tiger snakes are large deadly snakes that have been responsible for many deaths in Australia. Intriguingly, they give us a view of evolution equal to any. Work done by herpetologists including Mirtschin, Schwaner, Shine, and others reveal an insightful story. It is in the tiger snakes that we see a species with an extraordinary ability to adapt. Tiger snakes are one of the more accomplished opportunists in the world of elapid snakes and their special characteristics allow us a good opportunity to view the way in which new species come about.

NEW RELEASE

A FIELD GUIDE TO REPTILES
OF
QUEENSLAND

By Steve Wilson

Published by Reed New Holland, Australia. Jan 2005
Soft cover - plastic sleeve. 21cm x 15cm. 256 pages. Keys to Genera. Color photos. Distribution maps.

Queensland is home to an extraordinary diversity of reptiles. This is because it has so many different types of habitat. In the tropical rainforest lives one of Australia's most spectacular dragons, the Boyd's Rainforest Dragon. The arid south-west is home to the deadly Inland Taipan. In the deeply cracked black soiled plains of the Mitchell Grass Downs, Collett's Snake hides from the baking midday sun. In the far north there are isolated pockets of New Guinean animals, among them the magnificent Green Tree Python, which lives in the Iron and McIlraith Ranges and can be found by day coiled around thick vines. And few Queensland homes are without delightful nocturnal geckos.

A Field Guide to Reptiles of Queensland covers all of Queensland's 440 named species, including 135 that occur nowhere else. Colour photographs make for quick identification, aided by line drawings, keys, distribution maps and descriptions.

Steve Wilson has recently co-authored with Gerry Swan the authoritative A Complete Guide to Reptiles of Australia. His lifelong love affair with reptiles has taken him to some of Australia's most remote places. An excellent communicator, he has written and illustrated many articles and in 2000 he won Australian Geographic's Photography of the Year. For 18 years he has worked at the Queensland Museum, educating the public, identifying their specimens and raising awareness about Australia's unique biological heritage and how to conserve it.

The Herp Shop price - $34.95.

A FIELD GUIDE TO REPTILES
OF NEW SOUTH WALES

By Gerry Swan, Glenn Shea and Ross Sadlier

This is a thorough update, expansion and revision of A Field Guide to snakes and Lizards of New South Wales which was published in 1990.

In A Field Guide to Reptiles of New South Wales you will find every gecko, flap-footed lizard, goanna, dragon, skink, snake and turtle known to live throughout the many habitats of New South Wales. This State reptile guide narrows down the field of species identification to a manageable size for any naturalist.

The telltale details that make identification possible lie in the descriptions of families, genera and species: these are accompanied by clear line drawings. Where you need to tune out similar species, simple keys are provided. For herpetologists, the location maps, generated from the Australian Museum database, will prove invaluable.

Gerry Swan is an Associate of the Australian Museum and well known author.

Dr.Glenn Shea has a PhD in veterinary science and is a lecturer at the Dept. Veterinary Anatomy at Sydney University. He is a taxonomist who has published 100 or so scientific papers.

Ross Sadlier is the Collections Manager for the Herpetological Dept. of the Australian Museum. He has a BSc and has co-authored a book on the reptiles of New Caledonia.

**** NEW BOOK RELEASE ****

A Complete Guide to REPTILES of Australia
By Steve Wilson and Gerry Swan

Soft cover, 480 pages, published by Reed New Holland.

Australia has one of the richest and most diverse collections of reptiles in the world: more than 800 species have been described to date. A Complete Guide to Reptiles of Australia provides accounts of all of them and nearly all are illustrated with lively colour photographs showing them in their natural habitat. Whether you want to identify reptiles in the wild or in your garden, this book is for you.

Species are grouped in families, for example Skinks, Geckos, Monitors, Blind Snakes and Pythons. Each entry includes a distribution map, a description - with distinguishing features picked out in bold text - notes on a species' preferred habitat and range, information on subspecies and similar species and, wherever appropriate, the conservation status of that species. Extra photographs show most recognised subspecies, as well as differences within species and between sexes.

The book also explains how reptiles are classified, how scientific and common names are applied, how to measure a reptile and how conservation status is determined. Photographs of different reptile habitats will help you pinpoint the likely location of certain species.
